Staged Memory Care: Middle Stage

Middle Stage memory care increases support to residents with a focus on individual capabilities and personalized plans

At Emerald Crest, we believe in focusing on the skills and abilities our residents have, and in our Spring Houses or Middle Stage memory care, supports are increased according to personalized plans that encourage continued engagement. In this second of the three levels of dementia care, plans are tailored even more carefully as needs progressively change. In Middle Stage dementia, residents may become less independent, but continue to thrive with added accommodations.

The Spring House: A Middle Stage Memory Care Residential Home

Our Spring House is designed to specifically match the cares and needs that occur as memory loss progresses. Residents continue to enjoy meaningful interaction with others of similar capability, while supports are added within a personalized framework to continue focus on the highest levels of a resident’s abilities. Residents at this stage typically require full assistance with daily care, and 24-hour supervision. Staff continue to offer opportunities for interaction that support mind, body, and spirit, while remaining observant and communicative with a resident’s entire care team.

Staff Training

As assisted living memory care providers, our registered nurses and human resource representatives serve as our primary staff trainers. We maintain cohesive teams that receive ongoing education and training to best care for those with early stage memory loss. With our consistent focus on abilities, and in cooperation with family members, individual care plans are developed collaboratively for each individual resident. This customization promotes an ongoing sense of purpose and pride for all involved, and allows residents to thrive and retain life skills for longer periods of time.

The Role of Evaluation in Selecting Middle Stage Care

The Allen Cognitive Scale is just one of several tools we use to create a personalized plan for care. Created by occupational therapist Claudia Allen, it’s an in-depth assessment tool used to highlight a resident’s abilities, identify needs over time, and help plan treatment and guide placement in our residences. Middle Stage memory care in our Spring House corresponds, approximately, with Level 3 (3.3 to 3.8) on the Allen Scale.

About the Spring House Environment

Similar to the Vine House, the Spring House physical environment plays a key role in providing personalized memory care assisted living services. The Spring House is a single-story barrier-free home, accommodating no more than 12-15 private suites. Individual suites feature private rooms with private bathrooms and residents have access to a home-style kitchen in the Spring House. Connected spaces include safe interior and exterior walking paths, common areas and a courtyard, with comfortable settings that encourage activity, interaction, and socialization. The entire design supports residents with Middle Stage memory care needs. In the Spring House, meaningful activities highlight familiarity and are designed to keep both mind and body engaged.
