Staged Memory Care: Late Stage
In Late Stage memory care, a resident’s support needs are constant, and arise with varying degrees across language, self-expression, perception, and mobility
At Emerald Crest, when the progression of dementia and related care needs reaches the late stage, we surround our residents with specially trained staff and an environment that calms, comforts and offers familiar sensory experiences. Here in the Marigold house, support of Late Stage memory care needs continues focus on abilities wherever possible. Daily structure offers ample variety intended to keep residents engaged, along with the needed time for transitions. In the third of the three levels of dementia care, decisions continue to be made in partnership with families, and staff maintain a keen awareness of residents’ changing needs. Changes are communicated among the staff team and to family. In Late Stage dementia, continual comfort and care are blended seamlessly with daily activities.
The Marigold House: A Late Stage Memory Care Residential Home
Our Marigold House is designed to specifically match the cares and needs that occur as memory loss reaches later transitions and expected challenges. Residents receive constant supervision and care while presented with continual opportunities throughout each day to enjoy purposeful activity that is both engaging and familiar. Residents at this stage will require full assistance, 24-hour supervision and an alert team of staff members who are trained to recognize and support evolving needs. Staff and residents both focus on support of mind, body, and spirit.
The Role of Evaluation in Selecting Late Stage Care
Careful evaluation is critical in later stages of dementia and can be especially complex due to the interaction of evolving needs in many facets of an individual’s daily life and experience. The Allen Cognitive Scale is just one of several tools we use to create a personalized plan for care. Created by occupational therapist Claudia Allen, it’s an in-depth assessment tool used to highlight a resident’s abilities, identify needs over time, and help plan treatment and guide placement in our residences. Late Stage memory care in our Marigold House corresponds, approximately, with Levels 3.0 through Levels 2 and 1 on the Allen Scale.
About the Marigold House Environment
Similar to the Spring and Vine Houses, the Marigold House physical environment plays a vital role in providing personalized memory care assisted living services. The Marigold House is a single-story barrier-free home, accommodating no more than 12-15 private suites. Individual suites feature private rooms with private bathrooms. Residents have access to community spaces that support physical wellness, an appropriate level of social interaction and activities, and spiritual connection. Importantly, community spaces include safe interior and exterior common areas, which are continually supervised and secure. The entire design for Late Stage residents supports their specific memory care needs. See an example of the Marigold House Daily Schedule, or click here to see full PDF file.
